The Almost But Not Quite Summer Solstice Post

We all know how important the summer solstice is to a wide and diverse array of traditional and modern cultures...

...(at least I think we all do)...(those of you who don’t, please Google summer solstice)...(then come right back)...(we’ll wait)...

...(everybody else, please breathe mindfully and maybe do a couple sun salutations)...

Awright...now, everybody should know that the summer solstice is not, in fact, till Monday...

Yet, with fireflies abundant as beads of sweat on my forehead...(not to mention, hell, if I can’t go to the store in October without hearing Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, three or four days early ain't much)...and in the fervent hope that, like Bob’s Gita Talk, this blog may inspire fruitful and enlightening discussion, I’ve delved into the vast wealth of oral and written traditions, pictographs, and ancient monoliths from around the world to find some ancient, revered, and highly meaningful lines to share on this almost-but-not-quite-summer-solstice...

Callin’ out around the world,
are you ready for a brand new beat?
Summer’s here and the time is right
for dancin’ in the street...

Martha and the Vandellas*

Some thought-provoking questions to get us started:

1) Does the reference to a brand new beat imply a refutation of traditional, cyclical conceptions of seasonal change in favor of a more urban paradigm, as suggested by the evocation of the street as a site for dancing?

2) Should summer’s here and the time is right be understood to assert a prohibitive view toward dancing at other times of the year? Or, are we to understand that it is only during the summer months that the streets are acceptable for dancing, while dancing inside or on the grass are permitted at other times? Might the implication be that streets are the only locations where dancing is condoned during the summer months, indicating a prohibitive view toward dancing anywhere else during this period of the year?

3) Does this emphasis on streets reflect a tension with the then thriving beach party culture (see Funicello, Annette)? If so, can streets be interpreted in a more contemporary context as representing any outdoor area (including, conceivably, the beach)?

4) If we take callin' out around the world literally, should people in the southern hemisphere also dance in the street, even though it's the beginning of winter there, and they might catch a chill?

5) In the lines that follow, particular locations are named:

Dancin’ in Chicago, down in New Orleans,
New York City, All we need is music...

Do these locations embody particular spiritual significance—like Jerusalem, Mysore, Mecca, or the vortexes in Sedona? Should we take this as a call to make pilgrimages to these locations at the solstice?

6) How are we to take the cryptic statement all we need is music? Is the implication that music can sustain life in the absence of other nourishment?

7) Or does it imply that the street dancing here called for is in fact a fertility ceremony, and that, if it is performed properly, at the summer solstice, crops will be abundant and the people’s needs met?

8) Might dancing be taken metonymically to represent merriment in general?

9) Or is it all, really, about sex?

10) William James wrote

Common sense and a sense of humor are the same thing, moving at different speeds. A sense of humor is just common sense, dancing.

What happens when common sense dances in the street?

Please try to keep the discussion civil.

* ...while originally passed down to us by the esteemed Martha Reeves, these lines are believed to have originated with William “Mickey” Stevenson, Ivy Jo Hunter, and Marvin Gaye...though known to many primarily through translations, interpretations, and commentaries by the likes of David Bowie, the Grateful Dead, the Carpenters, and Van Halen...(as well as more gnostic readings by Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones in which racing and fighting, respectively, are substituted for dancing)...

That Yoga Thing

to live is to fly, low and high,
so shake the dust off of your wings, and the sleep out of your eyes...
Townes Van Zandt

...had stuff to do in a whole lotta different places in the city today...without a lotta time to do any of it...running around like a chicken with its head cut off...but on a bike...and a bit on foot...healthier, cheaper, and avoids the waking nightmare of trying to get around center city Philadelphia in the middle of the day by car...hectic, crazy, frenetic movement...which, strangely enough, left me feeling better than I have in weeks...

...by the time I got to this evening’s yoga class, was exhausted, sore all over the place...and, as I know already, yoga class can be downright painful after biking crazily around town all day...and it was...but I was cool with that...not ignoring, transcending, or escaping sore and tired, but deep inside both...pumping on all cylinders...feeling whatever I felt...and good with it...

if the spirit moves ya, let me groove ya...
Marvin Gaye

...it’s never been exactly unusual for me to feel alienated from any thing or body around...especially my own...which is one reason that yoga thing’s been particularly potent...working that mind & body thing...even if I’m a bit more ambivalent about the spirit thing...tending to be kind of a trippy mystical dude when hanging out with atheists, and a grumpy non-theist when hanging out with believers...overall, probably happiest swimming in the boundless unknown...when I can manage it...

just to dig it all and not to wonder, that’s just fine...
Van Morrison

...then, I think I’ve come to some kind of understanding of that namaste thing...which doesn’t mean you’re cool because you believe what I do....it means whoever you are and whatever you believe or don’t believe, what's in you is as holy and sacred as anything...

...thanks to Brooks and Lea for sending some blog love my way...even while I’ve been barely reading anybody else’s blogs lately...so it goes...namaste to all...

Loving the Earth...one day a year...

...I read something once...really, it’s not gonna get much more precise than that...this guy from I think a Middle Eastern country was mocking Mother's Day, saying "what? You have only one day a year to honor your mother?!”...and he kinda had a point...which brings me to Earth Day....

...which I’m continuing to celebrate by recycling comments left on other people’s blogs...then, I’m sick...my body filled with toxins in empathy with our increasingly polluted earth...or something...

...anyway, as said mysterious illness feels me rather uninspired...not to mention grouchy...I’ll do some more recycling, and direct interested readers toward an early post (itself recycled from a yoga retreat some months earlier) called ...though it doesn’t love me... as well as something written after my more recent retreat, inspired by Marvin Gaye, the loss of a passport, and a whole lot of garbage washed up on a Mexican beach, called Mercy Mercy Me (Further Notes from Exile)...namaste for now...

A Totally Marvin Gaye State of Mind

talk to me so you can see what’s goin’ on...
Marvin Gaye

...back in Philly in a totally Marvin Gaye state of mind...not tragic coked-up, shot-by-his-own-dad Marvin Gaye...mellow, spiritual, socially conscious What’s Going On Marvin Gaye...if at all possible, you should listen to that album while reading this post...as I am while writing it...flying high in the friendly skies, never leaving the ground...

...I’m a lot poorer...financially...than before leaving for the ol’ yoga retreat en Mexico thingy...couldn’t really afford it in the first place, and then the passport fiasco ultimately cost me...never mind...plus, my ipod pretty much got wiped by an inopportune wave as I wandered along through the sand listening to the Harder They Come soundtrack...trying yet again to see how close to Guatemala I could get...miles and miles of walking showing nothing ahead but long green coastline...but, in the end, that’s okay...I may not have turned into a Floating Glowing Being of Pure Love...but I’m alright...

...and aaaaaall he asks of us is that we give each other love...one thing not said enough among those doing sun salutations in tropical paradises like Tulum is that, rustic as thatch-roofed cabanas and pipes that can’t handle toilet paper might seem, these paradises tend to be located in the third world, where such adventures-in-living-simply represent levels of luxury most of the locals couldn’t imagine...except from the perspective of service labor....when pondering how much to tip, it might be a good idea to repeat to oneself the following mantra: this hardworking person probably makes less in a year than I’m paying for this week-long vacation...

...what’s happenin’ brother?...much as I love to complain...and I truly do...the truth is that I live an amazingly charmed life...and it’s important to remember that...namaste...right on, feel it...

Mercy Mercy Me (Further Notes From Exile)

Pressure drop, oh pressure, pressure gonna drop on you...
Toots & the Maytals

...the Caribbean’s been kinda funny this week...not its usual placid self...incredibly windy, with waves that’ve wiped out whole sections of beach in the short time I’ve been here, battered sea walls, and, a night or two ago, caused a concrete deck to collapse down the beach, leaving these giant tree-pole-thatched-umbrella things lying in the sand....if it were always this way, I wonder if this region might’ve given the world hardcore and thrash-metal instead of reggae and calypso...

One minute after dozing, I thought that I was blazing,
My blood it was a boiling, I said it was amazing...
Peter Tosh

...a couple days ago, the sea puked up mounds of seaweed, detritus, and lots and lots of plastic trash all up and down the beach...unpleasant, certainly...then, maybe one root of our ecological crisis is that we don’t see our waste enough...we put it in plastic bags, put the bags in plastic cans, take the cans out to the street, and it’s gone...we think we’re “green” or “eco-conscious” because we dispose of our massive quantities of factory-synthesized products and seemingly limitless non-recyclable and generally completely unnecessary product packaging responsibly....who among us, in our unspeakably wasteful modern lifestyles, isn’t just asking to get barfed on by the ocean?

Oil wasted on the oceans and upon our seas, fish full of mercury,
Oh, mercy mercy me, oh, things ain't what they used to be...
Marvin Gaye

...of course, if I wanted to be a totally pretentious yoga dude...which, of course, I don’t...I could also use this as a metaphor for those mindwaves Patanjali talks about stilling in the Yoga Sutras (in some translations, at least)....first, ya gotta let ‘em rage...let ‘em spit up whatever trash is in there...bring it out to be seen....in the end, hiding your trash never works...it always winds up spread out all over the beach when ya least expect it...
