In From the Storm
...Saturday night lights went out about 10:30...flickered back on for a second, then off for good...in a house with a well...meaning no electricity, no pump, no running water.. sweaty after a long day, would’ve liked a shower before bed...actually took a little while to figure out how to make that happen...moving in naked circles in near-pitch dark, crazed tropical winds blowing rain from all directions...
...following a night boxed in against the elements, though effected by them, anyway...morning yoga practice without music, any light or temperature control beyond what came through the windows, opened just enough not to let in too much remaining wind and rain...finding quietness, birdsongs reemerging through the waning waves of storm...
...booting up the laptop by candlelight...letting the internet keep up its busy rancorous thing without me...tree fallen across the lines blocking half a major roadway...the tree removal people said the power line’s still live...power company said could be two weeks...neighbors hope that’s just their standard answer...

I love what I imagine as your shower scene. Reminds me of when I was grade-school aged and we visited my grandparents in KY in the summer. There was always a torrential downpour, and my mother would send me out into the front yard in my bathing suit with a bar of soap. No indoor plumbing at Grandma's, so it was either Mother Nature or bathing out of a wash pan. MN was so much more fun!
Sounds like a bare-bones, yet down-to-Earth, yoga session that you had. And here's hoping that all of your storm-related issues are resolved soon!
Best kind of yoga practice I think. :~)
I truly enjoyed the 31 hours of no power, with the silence and calm inside and Irene howling outside. My husband, not a fan of the silence, tinkering, dinkering, and pacing. For a short period of time it was lovely to shut off and cuddle with the dog, read a book, and nap.
I hope the 2 weeks for power is a standard answer and it comes back on sooner so you can shower...
"finding quietness, birdsongs reemerging through the waning waves of storm... " yeah that's my kind of morning...hope you have power now though.
The east coast is drenched to over-flowing. Hope you have power and that the hurricane season will be kinder to all in the northeast as the season progresses. Take care and stay safe ... and dry. Hope all your electric stuff is now on again!
ah Dr. Jay, we are so used to the 'new world' so easy to miss the every-day comforts we so many times take for granted... i am sure you are finding those bird songs more interesting now
