This Actually Happened...

...there was this woman I was feeling really attracted to, and she was sitting near me...not conventionally beautiful, I don’t think...but not notably unconventional...or unusual, looking, either...though I certainly wouldn’t want to say she looked ordinary...because she didn’t....and, beyond that, I can’t say much...since I didn’t have my glasses on...and the room was kinda dim...so, really, I could hardly see her at all...don’t know for sure if I’d recognize her if I saw her again...though I’ve been thinking about her ever since...

...anyway, she was talking somewhat loudly to this other woman across the way...can’t say much of anything at all about her...but they were talking in this strange language...kinda clipped, choppy-sounding, somewhat guttural and staccato, like an early new wave song...and I wondered for a minute or two just what language it was...until, after a little while, I recognized it...realized it was English...though I still didn’t understood a word they said...

bahaha. awesome story- and most awkward. kinda like those intros Dave Matthews gives to his live shows.... lol.

A similar thing (kinda) happened to me in a Montréal Café- heard something that sounded like French... but wasn't... like a weird mixture of French with english sounding vowels or something (not Frenglish, there was a difference). come to find out it was probably a swedish dialect (from locals).

What does it mean? Were you in an altered mind state? Are you attracted to women you can't understand? Did the strange language appeal to you? Do you need a translator? ...phermones getting in the way?

Why does this post seem to bring up questions for me?

Can you dig deeper and share it all totally publicly on your blog? Am I getting obnoxious or silly?

Pheromones have been known to inhibit some senses, why not hearing?

Ah, dude don't worry about it. It's called the Stolichnaya Interpersonal Communication Channel Inhibitor. Happens to us all the time, although on the bright side, as you lose your ability to understand English, your facility with Klingon improves dramatically.

My take is: this simply happened. Nothing special (unless you WANT it to be).

Thanks for the comments everybody.

Brooks:
I don't know. Possibly, but not "altered" in any artificial or intentional kinda way. Yes. Maybe--but I think the real question here is why the language sounded strange. Possibly. Maybe.

I don't know. On a side note, though, after reading your "Fancy or Imagination" post, it occurred to me that this story could be a case of Vikalpa.

The answer to the previous question's as deep as I've gotten with it. Obnoxious: of course not; silly: possibly, but I don't think so.

I thought perhaps I was reading about a dream state, but I see from the above that I wasn't - or perhaps it was a waking dream state... I can't think of anything helpful to add! other than perhaps your attraction wasn't a truly healthy one, and something within you knew that and helped to protect you by scrambling even her language to make her completely unrecognizable in future meetings?!

"...been thinking about her ever since..." Ahhh...

Well, I found this post quite romantic, drjay, and perhaps you were so enthralled with her mere presence that you weren't concentrating on the language as deeply as you thought. Anyway, I look forward to a happy followup, though I find Karen's self-preservation theory really funny!

Glasses...really?

...oops, I meant Karin, not Karen...sorry

Thank you for your response. It is all rather fascinating. I think that the people who stand out for us may inteed have something to say or express that we might like to hear or experience. Maybe stay open to the communication.

You live in your head a lot don;t you dude? I mean you really don't get out much do you? The body goes but the mind stays within.

What an enticingly curious little snippet of a slice of your life. I have actually had the experience you have had--where I have been in the U.S. and heard a conversation that I didn't understand at all!

Hahahahahahahahaha!

Happy Holidays, Jay! May the New Year bring you much health and happiness.

I think pheromones and perhaps a particular energetic attraction was going on...also maybe you are going though colorful cupcake withdrawal and this is causing that feeling of "altered state"...or then again perhaps you had too many colorful cupcakes and that's what's causing this inability to grasp what they were saying. I know over stimulation of any kind will do this to me...but my brain is wonky from MS...I think Brooks had some pretty good questions though!

hola Dr. Jay
what a lovely post... i think life gave you little understanding of the conversation as a gift of mystery, i think you are lucky to have not understood the attractive woman's words, so the mystery continues, 'cause after all, what is love without a bit of mystery

and i do agree that many times i heard conversations in English and Spanish that i don't understand myself

but i feel your misunderstand was a gift indeed, what if she was saying something boring? or something magnificent? now you might one day know and since you been a good yogi the whole year, maybe Santa will bring you the meaning tomorrow morning for you to unwrap!

hope you are enjoying your Christmas day

the past week, i've been practicing daily yoga with my mom... and as i grabbed my toes trying a Paschimottanasana, i thought of you, ah!! this is what Dr. Jay does, i thought, heh heh, it was a cool moment and my x-mas present for you ;) something to look forward in 2010 to decipher the mystery woman's English cryptic tongue ;)

Namaste to you Dr. Jay, thank you for a year of lovely posts
