2011: The Year the Yoga Cynic Goes Legit

I don’t believe in yoga...
John Lennon, God

I don’t believe in yoga, I practice yoga.
Ancient and Revered Yoga Cynic Sutra 360.21

...it’s 2011 and I’ve resolved to stop leaving my yoga mat at the studio....that’s not the big news, though...

...up until now, this humble site has reveled in its unique status among yoga blogs...y’know, the one written by the guy who doesn’t actually know crap about yoga....as stated so succinctly in its very first post...

this woman I was kinda sorta involved with said she was curious about yoga and wanted me to teach her some. I told her I’m still working on not hurting myself by overstretching my hamstrings. Hell, I’m still not even sure what hamstrings are.*

...even cluelessness, however charming, turns out, eventually, to be impermanent...
Ancient and Revered Yoga Cynic Sutra 223:461

...this year, though...specifically in February and March...I’m stepping away from the time honored personal ritual of sitting around depressed until spring...instead heading up to spend a month in the snowy Berkshires, at Kripalu...eating, drinking, and sleeping yoga, while completing...are ya ready for this?...a 200 hour yoga teacher training...

...that’s right, people, the Yoga Cynic’s going legit...

...soon I’ll be able to fill this blog with dry, didactic, and painfully self-satisfied lectures on Real Yoga (i.e. what I learned in my teacher training...as opposed to that crap you do)...as well as to use that legendary inaudible-from-more-than-six-inches-away yoga teacher voice...(though, obviously, I need to come up with a written equivalent to use here)...(perhaps this)...and, generally, to act really egotistical while insisting I’ve overcome my ego...

...or maybe not...though I'll probably find out what hamstrings are...

...seriously, it's gonna be intense and challenging, and I'm excited...hope you all have good stuff coming up this year, too...namaste & all that...

*...this, needless to say, was before Y4C found the magic of ellipses...**

**...Y4C, I’ve decided, is a good abbreviation for Yoga for Cynics...up until now, I’ve used YforC, but everybody else seems to prefer the more succinct YfC...which makes me...and probably everybody else...think of KFC...which, y’know, doesn’t exactly help with the all-important-for-yoga-bloggers vegan demographic...

I agree, Y4C. I started using YFC once and all I could think of is "Yoga Fried Chicken", which, of course, doesn't make any sense, except that it made me laugh, and can you really say that anything that makes you laugh doesn't make any sense?...*

*...OMG, now I'm starting to write like you, so strong is your mystical guru influence.

Now, tell me how I can inspire you to bring a lot more of your shit to Elephant Journal... We need more of your kind over here, especially now that you're going to be getting your sheepskin...

Congratulations!

A new day is dawning for yoga in america! Yoga with ellipses will be the next rage.

My favorite teachers all have the essential ingredients you so possess - a sense of humor and a voice loud enough for the old deaf lady in the back (that'd be me) to not be left in savassana while the rest of the class is off to the coffee shop - oops, TEA shop.

Congratulations on going legit! Can't wait to read about your adventures at Kripalu, ego and all.

Congratulations, drjay! Like the Reese's cup, your unique points of view and yoga practice have come together sweetly...how nice! Lucy and I eagerly await a DC studio, as well as the Y4C tee, which, by the way, we've been waitin' for for *ahem* a few years now...

Para. 9 is sooo funny. :o)

And, a beautiful sunset. Really.

Happy new and prosperous year to you, drjay!

Nice! I will be looking forward to your teachings Dr Jay...

And not to worry, your hamstrings will be telling you all about themselves - they are magical warehouses of cynical stuff.

OM Shanti Y4C

Wow ... you're gonna be "intense and challenging". How will I recognize you?

I'd love to post a comment but I'm too busy compiling a list of questions for you at the moment, entitled: "Am I Doing Yoga Right?"

You're a natural teacher; this is a perfect next step for you. Can't wait for the discussions of your ego. :D

I agree with everyone here Dr.Jay- seriously awesome news. You will make a fantastic Yoga instructor.
Also- i love that someone compared your yoga practice to a reese's peanut butter cup. Which is the BEST comparison.
WOOT!

In honor of this, I present you with my yoga joke (more of a one liner) with full license to use as you see fit. My instructor had us in chair pose and mentioned that it was also called the "intense" pose, and asked why we thought that was. I piped up "Because that's how people used to have to sit in tents!"

This is great!!! I never completed my 200 hour PRYT training (my body decided it wasn't going to cooperate)...but you never know...life is full of surprises!!! Enjoy the journey...you're gonna feel some major shifts and openings...and...maybe...more...elipses...will be necessary to accommodate...the spaciousness (not spacey-ness)...hey if you ever have "leave" from boot camp...I'm only 3 hours away:)

congratulations, Dr. Jay!! Glad to read things are going well. I check in from time to time (although I haven't written on my own since being back stateside) and I'm thrilled for you and your new adventure. Wishing you happy new year blessings.

awww wish i could visit your town to get a yoga lesson from you Dr. Professor Jay! it would be great!! maybe once you are one enlightened yogi professor you can make some videos for us online or something...

the other day talking yoga with my mom we realized that we don't have a translation in Spanish for hamstrings... we call them the "tendones de atras de las piernas o atras de las corvas"... analyzing the English word for Hamstrings, we realized is something like "those strings that hold those HAMS" we couldn't stop laughing... i only hope that with more yoga practice my hams are more stringy and less heavy!

congratulations on the teaching endeavor!

A reluctant student here. Probably always a student when it comes to yoga. But you are evolving and that is pretty darned interesting. As the other 20 commenters..it will be interesting to read how this goes for you.

My New Years resolution...hopefully one that encourages growth and less discomfort for my dog...is to learn to play the violin with enough skill that I don't have to practice in the bedroom with the door shut so as to not make the Lab howl. As I mentioned...always a student.
