Life is Messy

often, the state of the kitchen is the state of the mind, confused and unsure men, pliable men, are the thinkers. their kitchens are like their minds, cluttered with garbage, dirty ware, impurity, but they are aware of their mind-state and find some humor in it. at times, with a violent burst of fire they defy the eternal deities and come up with a lot of shining that we sometimes call creation.... the man with the ever-orderly kitchen is the freak.... his kitchen is his mind-state: all in order, settled, he has let life condition him quickly to a basened and hardened complex of defensive and soothing thought-order....
Charles Bukowski

...badly underemployed and working on a novel about dysfunctional superheroes...biking downtown daily for the most intense and demanding vinyasa yoga classes I can find...discovering new ways and means for exploring and exploiting edges...leaving a pile of sweaty t-shirts, along with other laundry, by last week grown to the point that now I don’t want to deal with it simply because there’s too much to carry...sunlight can, now, be seen through four significant areas of my yoga mat...in line with hands and feet...which might seem cool in a sunny, happy, yoga hippie kinda way...put it in the right words along with a picture of a sunset and it’ll get a thousand “likes” on Facebook...but maybe, really, I just need a new mat, badly...writing about other people’s books*...piled around the deteriorating Ikea chair friends find so comforting...mp3 player blasting X, Cat Power, Mary Halvorson, Arvo Part, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, and the Stones’ Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out...coffee ready if I can get up the gumption to go and pour a cup this early in the morning...glasses held together with tape on both sides under disheveled hair badly in need of basic grooming....for a while, I was getting haircuts from this old guy who’d be asleep in the chair when I got there, and I’d have to yell to tell him how I wanted it cut...the last time, he seemed so out of it, didn’t even ask...

....one thing you have to get used to living in the big city is that it never really gets dark...wildlife is the birds always coming and going from the power lines outside my windows, their flight sometimes causing shadows inside the apartment, making me think, for a moment, that they’re in here with me...

...Democracy is messy, by definition...the trouble with the concept of heaven is that none of us, in the long run, could really be comfortable there...an eternity of having our every failing magnified in comparison to the perfection all around...messiness is our condition, underneath all the careful ordering and cleaning products...but that doesn’t mean I don’t need to do something with that pile of dirty laundry, and soon...

Post-Apocalyptic Self-Promotion

...Sandy, the semi-mythical Jersey girl Bruce Springsteen sang about and, apparently, spurned, so that she came back decades later to wreck the Jersey shore, has moved on...or maybe that conscious universe the yoga crowd’s always talking about caught an episode of Jersey Shore and decided to get all Old Testament on it...taking lower Manhattan and Red Hook Brooklyn...(which I know about from that Dylan tune...yes, I do comprehend the world through a lens of 70's rock ballads)...and much of the eastern seaboard with it....here in Philly, I’m finishing up a can of Mad Max brand dog food...Mad Max: The Dog Food Mad Max Eats!...and hoping to head out later for Tina Turner’s post-apocalyptic vinyasa class at Thunderdome...

...alright, enough snarky pop-cultural references...in the post-apocalyptic wasteland,* it’s self-preservation that counts...along with its dear acquaintance self-promotion...and so, I come bearing a cornucopia of  links: to my latest breathlessly self-indulgent book reviews, Yoga in America: Containing Multitudes and The Yoga of Biking: Pedal, Stretch, Breathe, as well as a first-ever interview with the Yoga Cynic (who manages to be sarcastic only about 73.2% of the time), all at Elephant Journal...read 'em, "like" 'em, share 'em, tweet 'em, make 'em central to your way of life and essential belief system...

* Totally Serious Postscript: actually went biking around Philly with a camera on Tuesday, hoping to get some good  pics of the local devastation for this post....it kinda looked like we’d had a bit of rain....thankfully, not only did Philly get through with little damage, but friends and family in harder-hit areas in NYC, NJ, and rural PA also got through unscathed, though some are still waiting to get power back....others, of course, weren’t so lucky, so here’s a link for anyone looking to help out the many still in need...

More Than Two Months Since The Last Yoga For Cynics Post

...more than two months since the last Yoga for Cynics post...can there be any more dire evidence of the decline and fall of blogging?...maybe...more likely, it’s just a reflection of my mental state...and what is a blog, at its best, but a mirror?...

...a brief listing of blog posts you may have missed since they never got written would have to include: I’m Miserable, Still Miserable, Totally Miserable, Oh God Am I Miserable, and I’m Gonna Try to Get All Sophisticated and Spiritual and Discuss My Misery in Terms of Samsara and the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths....in other words, ya haven’t missed much...(though there have been a few really, really insightful, interesting, and amusing Elephant Journal articles...with complete sentences, and everything)...

...things are improving, now, as the feverish ozone of the hottest summer ever gives way to the light chilly breezes of fall, and I’m packing boxes, getting ready to move the cynically yogic base of operations from the somewhat isolated sylvan hills of Mt. Airy, State of Perpetual Mellowness, U.S.A. to the more urban and connected, yet still somewhat sylvan, streets of West Philly, State of Semi-Intellectual, Semi-Grungy Samadhi, U.S.A....packing a few boxes but, mostly, throwing stuff out...

...if there’s one lesson I’ve learned lately, it’s that there’s an awful lot that needs to be thrown out...and I’m working on it...

In Which Dr. Jay Weighs in on the Anusara Controversy (Kinda, Sorta), and then Goes into a Most Entertaining Digression Involving His Head & Neck

...as mentioned a little while ago, I’m doing this anusara-inspired Align & Flow training*...in which I'm learning all about, among other things, principles of alignment...

...like, for instance, the way the skull loop interacts with the shoulder loop...(anusara lingo)...the latter beginning all the way at the upper palate, and including the neck....human anatomy, it turns out, is quite distinct from that of the bobble head doll...

...twenty years ago, in Boulder*******, long before I even thought about getting into yoga*********...(and, anyway, at that point far more interested in attaining higher consciousness by other means***********)...went to a meditation class with a visiting Zen master at Naropa, and somebody asked him about posture....he said something like it’s important to keep the head on top of the neck, and people laughed...but, I’ve since learned, he was actually describing something profound and difficult...particularly for those of us who’ve spent most of our lives walking around with a Charlie Brown droop in the neck*************...

*just as, it turns out, controversy erupts in and around the anusara yoga world**...

** when, already, certain yoga friends were warning me not to drink the kula-aid or lookin' at me like I said I was joining the Westboro Baptist Church, or something...which I don’t fully understand, nor, to be honest, care all that much about***...at this point, I’m learning lotsa valuable stuff, from people I like and for whom I have nothing but praise****...

*** and, yes, that was the official statement of this blog, its management, writing staff, shareholders, legal representatives, clowns, concubines, and corporate affiliates...

**** and not that creepy, semi-lobotomized dogma-reciting too-far-gone-to-see-the-contradictions “my guru tells me to think for myself” kinda praise, either*****...

***** as long-time readers know, I get creeped out by that kinda stuff far more easily than most yogis******...

****** so, trust me, when somebody offers me the profound honor of licking the holy perspiration off John Friend’s feet, I’ll head for the door...but, at this point, it seems highly unlikely anything like that's gonna happen...

******* right, that Boulder, home to Elephant Journal and all those self-important yoga hippies...though I was there when it was cool********...

******** not that there’s anything wrong with being a self-important yoga hippie, or anything...namaste, Boulder brothers and sisters...

********* and, thus, blissfully unaware of the all-important high-falutin' conflicts & controversies of the yoga world**********...

********** a state of innocence to which I’d quite happily return....I mean, seriously, I work part-time at this residential rehab for women, y'know, tutoring in reading and writing, and, sometimes, clients like to kind of rant to me about their frustrations...they say they feel they can talk to me precisely because I'm not a therapist...which is cool...some weeks ago, though, I got a bit irritated with one client who kept ragging on the other women there...I said something like come on...you're supposed to be here helping one another through your recovery and all you do is snipe at each other...I think it kinda applies...

*********** a state of experience best, I think, left behind************...

************ notably also preceding my lengthy academic period, when I learned the value of foot-notes, about which readers can make their own judgments...

************* also explored in a notable Arrested Development episode**************...

************** unrelated to which, but I wanted to mention it somewhere, the title of this post was originally a good deal longer, like a classic Tom Jones-ish 19th century-type chapter title, but it turns out there's a limit to how many characters can be in a blog title...thanks for squelchin' my creativity, Blogger...

An Alleged Yoga Hippie Goes to the Dentist

...the yoga streak ended at fifty-two days...number of weeks in a year...number of United States, if Washington D.C and Puerto Rico were admitted to the union...letters in the alphabet if you turn around at Z and go back...half a yoga mala if you take it easy and skip the last four....due to a toothache that led to four hours of intense dental work beginning at around 7:30 Thursday morning....which, could, of course, be seen as a very yogic exercise in maintaining stillness in the face of pain and discomfort...perhaps even contentment...but I ain’t there, yet...

...would I be a really bad yogi to point out the strikingly potent effects of practicing ujjayi and dirgha pranayama with laughing gas streaming in through the nostrils?...

...breathe in the nitrous, relax, feel, watch, allow...
Ancient and Revered Yoga Cynic Sutra 438:92

...complained to the teacher after last Monday’s kundalini class about her making us do that let’s-all-sit-in-a-circle hippie shit...she smiled, suggested I secretly like the touchy-feely stuff...(rumors, apparently, have been swirling since the month at Kripalu...when, allegedly, I hugged lots of people with minimal justification)...laughed and said ”go eat some granola”.....................(which, by the way, I do happen to have for breakfast most mornings...get it at the co-op...but really don’t see how that necessarily makes me a yoga hippie)...

Parts, Spare and Otherwise

...flying coach might be the opposite of yoga...causing everything to contract rather than expand...(except, of course, in the sense that everything is yoga)...

...out in Colorado for a coupla days...warmer weather than I’ve experienced in months making the body feel like it’s arising from hibernation...eating aloo gobi in Boulder with Waylon Lewis...(you might know him from Elephant Journal or the Dukes of Hazzard theme)...spending the afternoon wandering streets and paths in search of brain cells left behind there long ago...

...a good friend took me further up in the mountains to go cross country skiing for the first time in a years... awaking body parts long forgotten with a strange, snowy exhilaration...even as I wiped out four times on one hill...now reminding me of their presence repeatedly...

...went with the same friend to see 127 Hours...about a guy who didn’t exactly follow the wilderness dictum to leave nothing but footprints...finding, in the end, no matter how painful the process of separation might be, attaining freedom may involve letting go of a lot...including what appear to be essential parts of oneself...

The Paris Hilton of Yoga?

...couple posts ago, made some joking remarks about yoga teachers...specifically involving stuff like the inaudibly soft, ultra-spiritual yoga teacher voice....and, as a long-time believer that, if it’s worth saying at all, it’s worth beating into the ground, have been repeating said jokes all over the place....to the point that I think I may be giving some of my (amazing, wonderful, beloved) teachers complexes.....so, to any who might be reading this, let me make it clear...the jokes aren’t about you..........they’re about those high-falutin’ yoga teachers who write for Elephant Journal...

........just kidding, people...jeezus, aren’t you all supposed to have transcended your egos by now?...

...seriously, I've been going to Facebook lately and finding I'm in demand as a yogi...really...my yoga teacher friends are sending me personal requests to go to their classes...including one that’s supposed to be videotaped for some kind anusara certification or something...(and not, I’ve been assured for World’s Funniest Yoga Bloopers on youtube)...

...not that this is interfering with my totally enlightened egoless state or anything, but it does raise all kindsa pertinent questions...like...could such desirability indicate that the mere presence of the friendly neighborhood yoga cynic now carries such cachet as to confer status and set the yoga world buzzing?...kinda like the way Paris Hilton, I read some time ago, was getting paid fifty thousand bucks just to show up at parties?...could I be the Paris Hilton of yoga?...

...(y’know, like, except for the fifty grand part...but I’m workin’ on that...see below)...

...for all you yoga teachers out there...

The Slowly Unfolding Orgasm of Existence

We exult in out extraordinarily responsive central nervous system, which we ever seek to amplify through increasing exposure. We live in order to experience life more, and more closely. We soak up experience at every turn. Our bodyminds have evolved to participate fully in the slowly unfolding orgasm of existence. We have created yoga as a toolbox of participation.
matthew remski & scott petrie, yoga 2.0*

...last weekend took my mother to see Black Swan...(both liked it, though I probably would’ve enjoyed certain scenes without knowing mom was watching in the next seat)...(yeah, that one)...(and that one...definitely that one)...I’ve known lotsa dancers, and people who have dance backgrounds and are now yoga teachers...(almost as many as acid heads who are now yoga teachers)...and there are clear parallels between the traditions...as well as glaring differences...in the movie, somebody destroys herself, mind, body, and spirit, in pursuit of an aesthetic ideal...dying for perfection...which might be one of the better reasons to self-destruct, relatively speaking...like Oscar Wilde said...Most people become bankrupt through having invested too heavily in the prose of life. To have ruined oneself over poetry is an honour...

...I dunno, though...could be I’m finally coming to a point in my life where I start to see that all as just a lot of depressed romantic overgrown adolescent bullshit...

...not that there’s anything wrong with that...

...it’s cold out...cold enough stuff hurts when I go outside...or maybe I’m just getting old...or maybe both...growing old hurts, but youth, as I remember, can be painful as hell...

...snow’s falling gently outside the cafe window, sticking, first, to cars and benches...now sidewalk and street...not much more than a dusting, really...but enough to make driving ugly...had planned on going from here to run some errands...by car...and go to yoga class...but might be nice to stay put...have some more green tea and watch it fall...

...anyway, to misquote both James Joyce and Grace Slick, I’d rather have perfection die for me...

* this might be the first of possibly a buncha posts kinda sorta maybe having something to do with this book...which I just started.... thanks to Carol, for turning me on to the book with her review at Elephant...

How You React...(for another Sept 11)

...this blog's been slackin' lately...as its few remaining readers may have noticed...and don't expect this little bit of self-referentiality to be any significant improvement...

...been regretfully neglecting my blog friends, as well...not to mention staying cheerfully irrelevant in the midst of ongoing word-wars over yoga advertising...(though, if any of you yoga advertisers out there might be interested in some nude pictures of me...I can be bought)...(like, seriously...anybody interested?)...

...ahem...

...nonetheless, thought I'd share a link to an edited version of a post from a year ago today, in memory of events nine years ago, at Elephant Journal...and relevant now as then: How You React...(for Sept. 11) ...

That last post was pretty good, I think...

...it's been well over a week, with 103 degree temperatures, pouring rain, and multiple itchy summertime skin rashes since that last Yoga for Cynics post...but, it was pretty good, I think...and still pretty nicely sums up what's happening on my end....so, for now, it works...

...nonetheless, if you want, check out this and this at Elephant Journal...as well as Lindsay's blog, where I recently got an award...namaste until I think of something more to say...

Dreaming.....................

Dreams are true while they last, and do we not live in dreams?
Alfred Lord Tennyson

...was taking a walk, trying to figure out why I’m writing so little, lately...but mostly got lost in daydreams, as I have quite a lot, of late...which, I thought, might be exactly why I’m writing so little...

Dreams are like paper. They tear so easily...
Gilda Radner

...to really get down to it, there’s probably very little I’ve spent more of my life doing than daydreaming...if usually while also doing something else...find it’s difficult, otherwise...even if it’s easier than just about anything else....told somebody a few days ago that walking is my absolute favorite thing to do...and biking’s high on the list, as well...but both, really, along with kayaking, cross-country skiing, or driving on open road, are, more than anything, highly effective vehicles for daydreams...all involving simple motions...allowing lots of space to let the mind roam...

Reality leaves a lot to the imagination.
John Lennon

...daydreaming, as such, could be seen as the opposite of mindfulness...but, then, it also might be essential for creativity...

...art, maybe, is what happens when you’re mindful about your daydreaming...

Better To Stay Silent Than To Write Crap

Recycled Blogging for Earth Day

...the staff here was gonna come up with some brand new material for Earth Day...before thinking about just how just many blog posts are wastefully manufactured every day, only to end up in virtual landfills...

...so, instead, decided to root through the blue crate on the curb in front of the Yoga for Cynics corporate offices and, using approximately 90% post-consumer recycled blog material, craft an Earth Day piece for Elephant Journal...which has gotta be worth at least a couple carbon credits...so check it out...and, y'know, try not to mess up the earth too much...

I Twitter, Therefore I Am?

We don't exist...
The Meat Puppets

...buncha people asked me to add them on twitter...so I did...or at least tried to...kept typing names in and then hitting follow...until twitter told me one of them didn’t exist...so I double-checked...tried different spellings...maybe a dash- instead of an underscore_...but, nope, the person still didn’t exist...according to twitter, at least...so then tried typing in the next person...turned out she didn’t exist either...and neither did the next....none were even close enough to existing for twitter to offer any suggestions...

...thinkin’ something might be screwy, tried to find myself...or, at least, my blogger/twitter self...YogaforCynics, in case anybody’s interested...turned out I didn’t exist, either...

...so emailed the people who’d asked me to add them...told them twitter told me they don’t exist...and that, apparently, I don't exist, either...

...one responded, telling me it was a little early in the day for an existential crisis...though it seemed more a technological crisis than an existential one....then, according to a lotta science writers these days...when they feel like getting philosophical...the line between the two gets finer everyday...

...anyway, the problem seems to have fixed itself...we all do, apparently, exist...or exist again...at least according to twitter...

Pieces of Hate (the Other People, Part Two)

[note: The Other People, part one...a new, updated, improved edition, actually...kinda like a director’s cut...is at Elephant Journal...and reading this one without also reading that would be, y’know, like watching the Empire Strikes Back when ya haven’t seen Star Wars...or something...]

...self-hatred has been kind of an issue...made particularly difficult by the fact that, if you want outside support for self-hatred...that classic what other people think or would think if they knew kinda evidence for whatever might appear to be wrong with you...it’s never really hard to find...

...won’t you recognize us? We’re everything you hate...
Lou Reed

...some women hate men...and there are a whole lotta men who hate women...(have inscribed it into the belief systems of most cultures, no less)...then, whatever your gender, culture, race, nationality, religion and political views or lack thereof, there are, when ya get right down to it, a whole buncha people in the world who hate you for it...for what you have or don’t have...for what you believe or don’t believe...think or don’t think...who you love or don’t love...whatever you do or don’t do...for fitting certain definitions of ugly...though fitting too neatly into certain categories of beauty might make them hate you even more...

A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices.
William James

...practicing yoga, it’s said, can make a person less hateful, more at peace with the world...but it doesn’t always work out that way...and certainly doesn’t stop some people from hating yogis for being self-righteous, pretentious, flaky, empty-headed, wishy-washy, uptight, stupid, new-agey, out there, nuts, irritating, shallow followers of popular trends, mindless guru-worshippers, or frickin’ dirty hippies...spiritual tourists, arrogant unthinking western imperialist appropriators and colonizers of indigenous traditions, freaks, religious fanatics, granola nazis, demonic pagans, or godless heathens...creepy horny dudes who go to yoga classes to pick up women*, yoga faggots**, people who’ve obviously done way too much acid*** and/or are headed straight for eternal damnation...

...they hated me, they will hate you...
Sinead O'Connor

...some people will hate you for hating...or for not hating...or for hating the wrong people...or, no doubt, for hating the right people, but in the wrong way...some people hate themselves so much it's nearly impossible not to hate everybody they see...and, even more, to hate those they don't see....perhaps it says something about human beings’ boundless creative capacity that we can come up with so many reasons to hate other people...and maybe even more to hate ourselves...(if only because we have so much inside information to work with)...(though, in the end, I suspect it’s all the same thing)...

...(not to say it isn't sometimes a good thing to listen to criticism, or to critically assess oneself)...(now and then, if somebody thinks you’re an asshole, it could be because you’ve provided a really good reason)...

...(but...if you’re waiting for the whole world to think you’re okay to feel okay about yourself, you probably shouldn’t hold your breath)...

Ignorance May Not Be Bliss But Could Nonetheless Be a Pretty Correct Appraisal of My Relation to Infinity

I choose to let the mystery be...
Iris DeMent

...ignorance may not be bliss, but could, nonetheless, be a pretty correct appraisal of my relation to infinity...
Ancient and Revered Yoga Cynic Sutra 0.0

* as previously mentioned, I'm now brandishing my ignorance at Elephant Journal , as well as here...with Probably Not the Best Example of Loving Kindness...which might be familiar to long-time Yoga for Cynics readers...but this version’s better...and anyway contains probably the best first line I’ll ever write...as well as the probably really really familiar When Precious Met Alice...but, trust me, it’s way better the second time around*

Venomous Spiders, Handstands, Elephants, and Trying Yet Failing to Move With the Peculiar Grace of a Three-Legged Dog

...you’re the blessed, we’re the spiders from mars...
David Bowie

...bourgeois as this might sound, Yoga for Cynics will soon have a second home...as I’ve been asked to write for Elephant Journal...based in Boulder, Colorado...home to Tibetan Buddhists, organic vegan mountain oysters, and ludicrously expensive real estate inhabited by people who wear socks with sandals...(this blog is, as always, best read barefoot)...

...not sure yet how what ends up there’s gonna differ from what’s here...maybe written under my full name...possibly with proper sentences, without ellipses...perhaps a bit less self-indulgent...meaning you’ll still have to come here to find out why I spent all day Monday in bathrobe, fuzzy pajama-type pants, and the ratty t-shirt I’d had on since Saturday’s eleven o’clock yoga class...(featuring my first American handstand)...(as opposed to those laid-back Costa Rican yoga retreat handstands anybody can do)...after which, as rain continued to fall steadily for the second day in a row, decided there was no more optimal use for the day than sitting around drinking coffee...which I did....yeah, I know, there’s much disagreement about coffee amongst the yoga crowd...pure-living non-(as opposed to anti-, since they’re too positive to be against anything)caffeine types on the one hand, irredeemable bean junkies with their steaming mugs filled to the brim with tasty rationalizations on the other....but I’ve got a far more potent and dangerous issue to discuss...we’re talkin’ spiders, people...

...because, that evening, started feeling pain and noticed swelling in my upper foot/lower ankle...which I promptly blamed on yoga...though couldn’t actually think of exactly how, in this instance, yoga could’ve done it...(alright...can feel the eyes rolling from here....change that to how I could’ve done it by bringing a stupidly competitive attitude to yoga and not listening to my body...are ya happy now?)...or why it took all day for the damage to kick in....

...then, as the weekend wore on, pain and swelling steadily increased...compromising my ability to walk...leaving me staggering, limping, hopping, crawling...trying yet failing to move with the peculiar grace of a three legged dog...as well as feeling strange chills...fever...and noticing a little red mark right in the belly of the swollen area...dismissed, at first, as simply one of countless little red marks left over from the Nicoya Peninsula...but, then, remembered this nasty little spider hanging right by my comfortable-yet-stylish IKEA chair earlier in the day...which, out of a deep commitment to ahimsa...or extreme laziness...I left alone...and the realization dawned that this thoroughly non-ahimsa-practicing spider had, in fact, bitten me*...

...now, Tuesday afternoon, I’m on the mend...even changed out of that ratty t-shirt...went to the doctor...who prescribed antibiotics...without bringing up the word amputate even once...though still probably a few days away from doing any more handstands....anyone so inclined is more than welcome to send healing energies...or cash...

* not, actually, the gigantic Costa Rican banana spider in the photo...though thinking that made the story more interesting, didn't it?
